Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea eclipsed the old Half Marathon record with a new mark of 58 minutes and 23 seconds at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon.

The old record stood at 58:33 set by Kenyan Samuel Wanjiru in 2007.

Aside from the Half Marathon record Tadese also broke the world record over 20km.

He clocked 55:21, bettering the 55:48 mark set by Haile Gebrselassie in Phoenix, USA, in 2006.

Tadese previous PB for the Half Marathon was 58:59 in 2007.

He was the 10,000 metres bronze medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics made him the first ever Eritrean Olympic medalist, and his 20 km title at the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships also made him the country’s first athlete to win at a world championship event.

He does not use a sprint finish to win races: his strategy relies upon a combination of efficient running and fast pace setting.
