![]() Russia's Inga Abitova wins Yokohama Women's Marathon 2009 The Yokohama Women’s Marathon is an annual marathon held in Yokohama, Japan, and hosted by Japan Association of Athletics Federations, TV Asahi, the Asahi Shimbun. It was first held on November 15, 2009. The competition replaced the Tokyo International Women’s Marathon which was held in Tokyo from 1979 until 2008. Following the creation of the annual Tokyo Marathon in 2007, which featured its own annual women’s marathon, the sponsors decided to move the women’s marathon to Yokohama in 2009. The race held last Sunday featured the top two finishers from the Beijing Olympics. Russia’s Inga Abitova won the inaugural Yokohama Women’s Marathon. Abitova finished in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 18 seconds while Japan’s Kiyoko Shimohara was second at 2:28:51, and Beijing Olympic silver medalist Catherine Ndereba of Kenya was third in 2:29:13.
