Oh how the mighty have fallen. Tim Montgomery was once the star of the US Olympic team. An Olympic gold medal in 4×100m from the 2000 Sydney games, a silver in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the same event, and a sublime 9.78 seconds world record in the men’s 100m event, but now he will serve a five year prison sentence after pleading guilty for drugs possession and distribution
The 33-year-old sprinter was caught dealing more than 100 grams of heroin in the Virginia Beach area over the past year, one of the transaction was to an Drug Enforcement Agency informant.
Yes he had the talent, but he was ‘misguided’ and it all unfolds in 2004 when he was linked to using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. He was part of the the infamous BALCO doping scandal where a number of other prominent athletes, obtained steroids and human growth hormone from BALCO, a laboratory near San Francisco
Even though Montgomery has never been tested positive for drugs, he retired from running in December 2005 as Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) found Montgomery guilty and imposed a two year ban. Plus all the results and awards since 31 March 2001, which includes his world record, was stripped and wiped from the record books
The recent drug charges is not the only conviction for which he will have to serve. He still have a 46 months prison term for money laundering scandal. Montgomery is alleged to have received $20,000 for his participation in a three bogus checks worth totaling $775,000. His former coach, Steven Riddick who was the mastermind is now serving five-year prison term and his former wife Marion Jones also played a part. She was found guilty and sentenced to six month prison term
The judge also ordered a five years of supervised release and drug testing, after Montgomery had served his five year heroin sentence. Montgomery is currently supporting four children with four different women
