Coming this December 6-16th, the 24th edition of SEA Games will be held at Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. As the selection criteria for Team Singapore athletics is being underway, with it’s new Points system, this reporter tries to find out more about the location, facilities and progress that’s underway by the Thailand sporting body. So to speak, so as our athletes will have a glimpse of what to expect and preview in Thailand.
Why Thailand?

The 24th SEA Games was initially to be hosted in Singapore but the Singapore sporting body forgo their hosting duties this time round as our future groundbreaking Sportshub in Kallang is still in the works. It is planned to be ready by 2011, thus likely Singapore will only host SEA Games possibly at 2011. So Thailand stepped in and it’s their 6th time (1959, 1967, 1975, 1985 and 1995) to host the SEA Games. The opening of the SEA Games there will also commemorates the 80th birth anniversary of their revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Thai sports authorities are planning to organise 33 sports, including major events like athletics, aquatics, football, volleyball, boxing, cycling and tennis in the province which is about 260km from Bangkok.

The SEA Games will be held in the northeast Thailand’s Nakkhonratchasima province. The US$77 million dollar sports complex is currently being built in the province there and the progress has been encouraging since 2006. Though the province will be the main area for holding major games, as with previous SEA Games in Vietnam and the Philippines, athletes will likely be doing the events in multiple venues. While Nakhon Ratchasima is the main city that hosts the Games, Chon Buri and Bangkok will also be the venues for some sports. Here are just some of the new facilities being built

[…] I might be shooting myself in the foot, and putting myself out there on the line, but here goes. I think the points system currently being implemented has its ‘flaws’. For the clueless, the point system is commendably drawn up by our athletics association, basically them wanting to be ‘fair’ when it comes to giving positions in the much highly coveted spots of the individual and relays spots for the upcoming 2007 SEA Games in Thailand […]
