Payton Jordan, former US Olympic legendary coach, dies of cancer

Payton Jordan was 91 years old when he succumb to cancer last Thursday.

He died at his home in Laguna Hills.

Payton was known for his record twenty-four medals haul, including twelve golds at the 1968 Olympics for Team USA.

He was dubbed the coach who assembled one of the most powerful track teams ever.

The Californian-born Jordan was also a star athlete during his youth. He excelled in track, rugby and football. Jordan was a member of a world-record-setting 440-yard relay team, in a time of 40.5 seconds back in 1939.

During his coaching career he produced seven Olympians, six world record holders and six national champions.

Payton Jordan was also active during his twilight years, he held records in the senior divisions (age 50 and over).

He is survived by his two children. His wife, Marge died in 2006.
