With less than two weeks away from the opening of the 19th Commonwealth Games, a 95-meter bridge that was under construction near the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium collapsed.
It was located near the main entrance of the stadium, where the main action such as opening and closing, plus athletics action will be held.
Some 27 workers was injured, and it left five who are now in critical condition.
The bridge is to connect the carpark to the stadium itself, and since it’s a huge bridge, it cannot be repaired or replaced in time.
The Games has been plagued by health and safety concerns recently.
Some of its woes includes warnings by India’s anti-corruption watchdog that discovered sub-standard concrete and steel being used, mosquito-borne Dengue fever, aquatics centre false ceiling came crashing down, gunmen injuring two Taiwanese tourists in Delhi, to Indian mujahideen threats of attacking the Games.
