Hem Bunting, Cambodia’s top marathon runner
  • November 23rd, 2010

The below is a feature by Trans World Sport on Hem Bunting, Cambodia’s top marathon runner. He has three medals from two SEA Games outing so far. A silver medal in the marathon, and bronze in the 5,000m men’s event at 2007 edition, while a bronze in the marathon event at the 2009 Games.

The British Broadcasting Corporation has described him as “so poor he lives in the crumbling athletics stadium where he trains”. Bunting had few facilities and little funding to prepare for the Olympics. He trained by running laps on a track simultaneously used by casual joggers, and could not afford to buy running shoes. The BBC’s article on him moved one reader to send him new training shoes prior to the Beijing Olympics.

Take a look at the below report on Cambodian athletes. I think you’ll find it truly inspiring. Against all odds, these runners are makings headways.
