Haile Gebrselassie might retire after 2012 Olympics
  • March 20th, 2010

Haile Gebrselassie may hang up his spikes after the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

Gebrselassie was quoted, “It is difficult to put a date on when you stop.

If you plan to stop in 2012, it may not happen and it will affect you. I will let it come when it comes, but for me, London is now the biggest plan.

London is my top priority. If I could have the world record or an Olympic gold, I would choose the gold every time.”

Seen as his last attempt at another major success, Gebrselassie will have to fend off Sammy Wanjiru, the Kenyan 13 years his junior who is Gebrselassie’s most likeliest challenger to the gold.

Sammy Wanjiru is the defending champion from the last marathon Olympic edition in 2008, Beijing, China.

Recently Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie blew away the competition at the Dubai Marathon 2010 winning in a time of 2:06:09.
