Haile Gebrselassie missed out reclaiming his 10k road mark due to strong winds
  • May 21st, 2009

The 10-kilometre Great Manchester Run on Sunday, May 17, was won by Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie.

The 36 year old missed out breaking the 27:21 course record by Kenya’s Micah Kogo in 2007, when he finished in 27:39.

Gebrselassie intent to reclaim his world 10-kilometre road mark, which is currently being held by Kogo, when he ran 27:01 last March.

But strong winds blew Gebrselassie record attempt off course.

The Ethiopia was quoted, “Today it was wonderful in the first half but on the way back the wind was horrible. I wanted to run a world record, but in the second half it proved too difficult”

Ali Mabrouk El Zaidi of Libya was second in 28:13.
