Oklahoma State freshman German Fernandez turned some heads and attention state-side at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships last Saturday when he ran 3:55.02 in the mile, winning the race and clocking the sixth fastest time in the world this year.

The 18 year old also meted out a new World Junior, NCAA collegiate & Big 12 record at the indoor mile event.

Fernandez who is also the 2009 US Junior Cross Country Championships says, “I felt good from the start. My goal was just to go after my personal record and it turned out pretty good at the end, so I’m pretty satisfied.”

The Oklahoma State University student also won the 3,000 meters event in a new championship time of 7:57.71. The young lad has a bright future and someone to look out for in the big stage in the future.
