At the recent European Cross Country Championships held in Oostende, Belgium, it saw a strong contingent of British runners performing well. The annual Cross Country international race is held every December and organised by the European Athletic Association. The Championships has six races, from the junior ranks to the under-23 and lastly the senior categories. The country with the best finishing positions of the top scorers wins the Championships. Britain won it after grabbing a total of 4 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronzes, finishing with 12 points. They were 6 points clear of the nearest rival, France who had only 6 points. The Brits were helped by their excellent junior women team who did a complete rout of the Top 6 finish, all British. Stephanie Twell who finished first in the women junior category is touted as the next ‘Paula Radcliffe’ and a potential medalist for 2012 London Olympics. The current World Junior 1500m winner recently finished 6th in the heats at the last Olympic Beijing Games. She did not proceed to the next round.
