Former Mile Record Holder Eamonn Coghlan inducted into Hall of Fame

Eamonn Coghlan runs 3:49 indoors setting the world record

Eamonn Coghlan an Irishman, was the former world 5000m champion, Indoor Mile world record holder and the only European to win the 5K title in Helsinki back in 1983, he will receive the Hall of Fame Award by Athletics Ireland.

The award will be held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel at a Gala Dinner on 15th November.

The Irish 4-time Olympian and world championship winning athlete is now a naturalized United States citizen and busy promoting his autobiography “Chairman of the Boards – Master of the Mile”.


  • In 1994 Eamonn became the first man over age 40 to run a sub-4 minute mile on the Harvard University indoor track. He was 41 at the time.
  • His nickname is Chairman of the Boards
  • From 1974 to 1987 he won 52 out of 70 races.
  • A world mile record 3:52.6 at San Diego in 1979
  • In 1983 the first ever sub-3:50 indoor mile
  • Coghlan has run 83 sub-four minute miles, indoors and out


  • World Championships – Gold 1983 Helsinki (5000m)
  • European Championships – Silver 1978 Prague (1500m)
  • European Indoor Championships – Gold 1979 Vienna (1500m)
