Debate Over “London 2012 Olympics” Stadium Track
  • November 13th, 2008

In Britain, most of the stadium are track-less to accommodate the soccer crazy nation and there has been dispute whether the future Olympic Stadium track should remain or be converted into other actual use after the Games.

There is a debate between Jacques Rogge, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Lamine Diack, the President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and an IOC member, regarding the future Olympic Stadium for London 2012 Olympics.

Jacques Rogge just don’t want the 80,000 capacity stadium to be a white elephant and didn’t care if the track remained while Diack wants the track to remain so as a legacy is left behind for the sport in Britain.

Other British athletics stars has also roped in their views and opinion.

British miler and 1500m former world record holder Steve Cram says the track should go as it wasn’t popular enough sport to have its own national centre, while London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe says the track should remain but downsize the capacity to 25,000 to prevent it becoming a “white elephant” after the games.

Dame Kelly Holmes, double gold medalist at 2004 Olympics in the 800 and 1500m and world marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe has thrown their support behind Coe’s plan.

Well in my opinion, it should stay. It is built as a athletics stadium in the first place, so leave it be.

Maybe it will kickstart British athletic prowess once again after a disappointing medal tally in Beijing at the last Olympics, where only four medal was brought back home. Only one was gold from Christine Ohurugou women’s 400m.
