Report
The athletics event for Day 8, one more than Day 7, where seven medals was being offered on a day where the men’s & female 4x100m relays finals promise some record breaking moments, whenever there was Jamaicans involved. Other finals include the Men’s 50km Walk, Women’s Long Jump Final, Men’s Pole Vault Final, Women’s 5000m Final, and Men’s Decathlon
The day started with Men’s 50km Walk. Despite the hot Beijing weather, Italian Alex Schwazer won the Men’s 50km Walk in a new Olympic record. He had a commanding lead from the start till the finish with a time of 3:37:09, smashing the old record by some 1min 20sec which had been held for the past 20 years. His nearest rival was Aussie Jared Tallent who settled for silver (3:39:27) in a new personal best time while bronze was collected by Russian Denis Nizhegorodov (3:40:14)
Women’s Long Jump Final saw Brazilian Maggi Maurren Higa successfully fending off the challenge of defending champion Russian Tatyana Lebedeva for the gold. Tatyana fell short of Maggi’s 7.04m effort by just 1 centimeters. Tatyana settled for silver with an effort of 7.03m, that makes it five Olympic medal for Lebedeva, only one of it gold and the recent one a bronze in the women’s triple jump. Maggi of Brazil leapt to a season best of 7.04m and was deservedly awarded the gold. A surprise bronze was won by Nigerian Okagbare Blessing who ‘blessingly’ leaping to 6.97m, smashing her personal best running up to the bronze medal. Lebedeva sums it best about the passion for her sport, “I focused but I risked everything,” she said. “It’s life, it’s sport”
The Men’s Pole Vault Final event was a battle between an Aussie and a Russian who were gunning for gold but it was finally won by Australia’s Steve Hooker after clearing a height of 5.96m, which is a new Olympic record. 23 year old Russian Evgeniy Lukyanenko took the silver with an effort of 5.85m. Despite Lukyanenko consistent performance this season, he just couldn’t muster that winning vault when he needed it most. Bronze went to Ukraine’s Yurchenko Denys with a height of 5.70m.
The 5km women finals event was won in a slowest winning time ever at the Olympics. Everyone was running a safe tactical race hoping that their finishing kick at the end will win them gold. At the last stretch of the race, three runners emerged from the pack sprinting, two Ethiopian of Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar, and Turkey’s Elvan Abeylegesse. But it was the Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba who had the better ‘kick’ finishing in a time of 15:41.40. She can now add that title to her recent 10,000m gold win earlier in the week. Once again Turkey’s Elvan Abeylegesse had to settle for silver, she won silver in the 10km women finals. Abeylegesse time of 15:42.7 was enough for silver, finishing just ahead of Ethiopian Meseret Defar who collected bronze (15:44.1)
The Men’s Decathlon saw the dominance of the American Brian Clay. He completed the Decathlon with 8791 points from the 10 events. That’s 240 points more than second place Andrey Krauchenko of Belarus. Cuban Leonel Suarez took the bronze who lost the silver spot when on the final Decathlon event of 1500m. Belarusian Krauchenko needed to be ahead of the Cuban to collect silver, and he did. He surged past the Cuban in the final stretch of the race to amass a total points of 8551, compared to Suarez’s 8527 points
The women’s 4x100m relay saw another baton disaster yet again. Hot favorite Jamaican relay women lost it during the 2nd to 3rd leg baton passing. Great Britain team also had a botched baton exchange. A delighted Russian team took the victory with a time of 42.31s and another surprise team on the podium was Belgium’s women team. They collected the silver with a new national record of 42.54s when Kim Gevaert anchored for them. Bronze went to the dark horse Nigeria’s women team finishing in a season best time of 43.04s
As for the men’s 4x100m relays final, the event saw the Jamaican team, hot off the heels of great individual performances, combined to storm not only gold but a new world record in the event with a time of 37.10 seconds, smashing the 16 year old record held by the American set in 1992 Olympics. Silver went to Trinidad and Tobago (38.06s) and Japan will make head turns when Asia will be represented up on the medal podium picking up their Olympic bronze medal, who finished in a time of 38.15 seconds, a season best
