Day 5 of 2008 Olympics Athletics (19th August)
  • August 20th, 2008

day-5-olympics-2008.jpg

Report

There’s no certainty of gold even if you’re an athlete going into the Olympics with the world best time or even a world record. It’s all about who’s on form on the day itself. Day 5 saw upsets, it was the order of the day, similar to Day 4 itself

This is an Olympic where athletes who barely made it to the Games that created chances for themselves and was deservedly rewarded. A fairytale story where dreams are made of. A case in point was Russian high jumper Andrey Silnov who won the men’s high jump final with a height of 2.36m. This was the same athlete who couldn’t even qualify for the Russian Team but got noticed at a last-ditch competition where he gave a season best jump of 2.38m. He was ordered a ‘jump-off’ between him and another jumper, and it was he who finally made it to Beijing. Silver spot went to Mason Germaine of Britain (2.34m) and bronze went to Russian Rybakov Yaroslav (2.34m)

A surprise win for the night was the 400m women’s final. Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu won the event ‘late’ coming from behind, in a time of 49.62 seconds. She snatched it from Sanya Richards who went out fast with a commanding run. But Richards was surpassed by the Brit runner Ohuruogu, as the American ran out of steam and was ‘dying’ in the running straights of last part of the race. Richards was overtaken by two athletes and had to settle for bronze with a time of 49.93 seconds. This win affirms Ohuruogu’s 400m world title in Osaka last year; who won it without Sanya Richards participation, as a quater-miler championship calibre. Jamaica’s Shericka Williams took the silver finishing in a time of 49.69s

In the women’s 100m hurdles final, it was a similar repeat of 1992 Summer Olympics Gail Devers incident, where the athlete stumbled on the last hurdle when leading the race and lost the race. It happened to pre-Olympic favorite American Lolo Jones who hit the ninth hurdle when she was leading the pack. The stumble cost her the gold and finished seventh. She was left dejected kneeling the track knowing how close she was. The stumbled opened the doors for American Dawn Harper to win gold in a time of 12.54 seconds, a personal best. Second was Mclellan Sally of Australia (12.64) and bronze Lopes-Schliep Priscilla of Canada (12.64)

Bahrain’s Rashid Ramzi emulated his childhood idol Hicham El Guerrouj feat by becoming the Olympic 1500m champion. Ramzi ran a ‘safe’ tactical race and allowed the other athletes to take the lead. At the last 200 meter mark of the race Ramzi began his move. He went past all and sprinted to the finish line in a winning time of 3:32.94. Asbel Kiprop, the Kenyan teen sensation was close in matching Ramzi ‘kick’ but it just wasn’t enough. Kiprop finished second in a time of 3:34.20 for silver. Bronze was won by Willis Nicholas of New Zealand (3:34.20)

European nation dominated the men’s Discus Throw Final. Kanter Gerd of Estonia won the gold with a distance of 68.82m, Poland’s Malachowski Piotr settled for silver (67.82m) while the bronze went to Alekna Virgilijus of Lithuania (67.79m)
