It has been an eventful ten days leading to this penultimate last event of athletics. It started on the 15th of August and ends today morning with the Men’s Marathon Final. The men’s marathon didn’t disappoint us indeed as the race which was flagged off early this morning which saw some surprises and a new record

Due to the sweltering Beijing weather, only 77 out of the total 98 marathoner managed to complete the event. 19 runners did not finish while 3 didn’t make it to the start. But there can only be one winner

Samuel Wanjiru became the first Kenyan to win an Olympic marathon and he did it in a new Olympic time of 2:06:32. Some 45 seconds away was Moroccan Jaouad Gharib in a time of 2:07:16 and an Ethiopia, Tsegay Kebede completed the podium finish for bronze in a time of 2:10:00

For the 21 year old Kenyan it was his first marathon win, and surprisingly third marathon participation. His last top finish was the Fukuoka International Marathon in Japan last December and he was also the runner-up at the London Marathon in April. But it was the gold won here that will probably top his running career. Wanjiru showed promise in the event when he set the world half-marathon record at the age of 18 years old. That feat was repeated again twice last year

Jaouad Gharib of Morocco who was the two time world champion had to settle for silver and this year’s winner of the Paris Marathon Ethiopian Tsegay Kebede was left in the wake of Wanjiru move in the last few miles of the race. Bronze performance was all he could muster
