Aside from the safety and condition of the athletes village, the Commonwealth Games has been hit-hard by the withdrawal of top names in athletics.
With the team from various nations slated to arrive this Friday, it was disappointing to find out your heroes won’t be in Delhi for the Games.
Some of the athletes that pulled out recently includes Olympic Champion in the women’s 400m Christine Ohuruogu, and 1500m Lisa Dobriskey due to injury. Both are defending champion in their respective events.
Also on the withdrawal list is Commonwealth Games triple jump defending champion Phillips Idowu, pulling out as he was concerned regarding the safety in India.
@Idowu was quoted on his Twitter, “Sorry people, but I have children to think about. My safety is more important to them than a medal.”
Recently a pedestrian bridge at the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium collapsed, where it left 23 people injured, five of which is in critical condition.
The conditions in the athletes village has been slammed by various nations which includes New Zealand, England, Scotland, Australia and Canada.
An official commented to the media concerning the athletes village as “filthy”, and “unsafe and unfit for human habitation”.
