2004 Olympic 20km Walk Champion Tested Positive
  • January 18th, 2009

Athanasia Tsoumeleka is the Greek walker who won the 2004 Athens Olympic 20km walk event.

But if the news of her positive test for banned substance is correct, she might be handed a likely ban.

Athanasia Tsoumeleka tested positive for the blood-booster erythropoietin.

Erythropoietin or ESAs have a history of usage as a blood doping agent, especially in endurance sports such as distance running, cycling, biathlon, triathlons, and, most recently, even billiards!

Her batch was taken two days before the previous Olympic Games in Beijing, last year August.

She finished ninth for the 2008 Olympic edition.

The 27 year old has denied taken any drugs and will instead retire from the sport for good.

This is not the first time Greek athletes has caught tested for using banned substance.

The long-list of Greek drug tainted athlete includes Fani Halkia and Tassos Gousis to name a few.
