Looks like there’s a association versus club issue in Jamaica.

Back at the World Championships back in August, six athletes from the Maximising Velocity Power (MVP) training group, which consist of former world record holder Asafa Powell, Olympic champions Shelly-Ann Fraser and Melaine Walker, Olympic 400m silver medallist Shericka Williams and hurdlers Kaliese Spencer and Brigitte Foster-Hylton skipped a preparation camp in Nuremberg, Germany.

Instead they stayed with their coach Stephen Francis at their Italian training camp in Lignano Sabbiadoro.

It was revealed last week on an independent inquiry panel that the Jamaican track management officials, the JAAA (Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association), as a punishment, asked the IAAF to remove and ruled that all six would not be allowed to run at the World Championship back in August.

JAA was quoted, “Having given due consideration to the matter, the committee is unanimously of the view that there is no further action that can be taken. A sanction was imposed against the offenders and, at the insistence of the president of the IAAF, the sanction was withdrawn. To attempt to revisit the matter would be tantamount to trying them twice.”

But lucky for us, IAAF intervened, the request was withdrawn and probably saved a whole lot embarrassment over the whole saga.

The panel reviewing the saga responded, “Something needs to be done to get the coaches to be more cooperative. They need to understand that it is the JAAA that is invited to these meets and the athletes only become eligible to participate if selected by the JAAA.”
