  • September 1st, 2008

The Hokkaido Marathon which was flagged off yesterday saw surprise podium winners as the main categories for men’s and women’s races saw a high school teacher and a girl teen winning their respective events

27 year old Masaru Takamizawa who retired from a professional running career and became a high school teacher, ran the race of his life, by finishing in a personal best time of 2:12:10 to win the men’s category.

His time was the third fastest ever ran for the route and bettered his personal best by some two and a half minutes.

He surprised many by fending off a field of quality runners that consisted of two-time Kenyan Olympic marathon medalist Erick Wainaina

The women’s event was won by an unknown 19 year old and amazingly her marathon debut.

Yukari Sahaku finished in a time of 2:31:50. Her ability is unquestionable as she us being coached by Yoshio Koide, who coached Naoko Takahashi, the Olympic marathon gold medal and a sub 2:20 women runner.

So young Yukari potential is still untapped and could only improve over time.

The tiny 1.43m and 32kg Yukari won the race ahead of her training partner, Hitomi Niiya, who herself finished second (2:32:18)
