Reported by Mark Tan7th June 09 – Despite being less than a decade old, Wings AC outshined their more illustrious counterparts and host, Swift Athletic Club. This 2-day track and field meet organized by Swift was targeted at primary school children with age-group categories from under-10s to the under-13s. However, there were selected Open categories as well, and everyone knows that the blue ribbon event for athletics is and always will be the century sprint. A total of nine heats were a clear indication of how popular the event will always be. Nevertheless, Wings AC dominated the finals with 5 representatives, Gary Yeo the slowest qualifier at 11.12s, Lance Tan, Lee Cheng Wei, Muhd Elfi and U.K. Shyam (100m National Record holder) the fastest at 10.88s. Although Shameer Ayub; one of the quartet who set a new national record in the 4x100m at the SEA games in Thailand, qualified for the finals, but he did not show up. No reasons were given. Nevertheless, the Wings camp was ready to put up a good show, and they did not disappoint. Cheng Wei, Elfi, Shyam and Gary swept the top 4 spots respectively. Quarter miler Lance who was a surprise finalist, finished a credible sixth. However, he had earlier competed in the 400m timed finals where he came in second, behind his club mate Kenneth Khoo, who ran 48.8s. Wings Athletic Club had a sole representative for the 100m Women’s Open. The rose among the thorns, Asmah Hanim, came in 3rd for the women’s 100m Open category with a strong timing of under 12.7s. Scott Wong and Lee Yue Jer also brought pride to Wings in the field category, coming in first in the Discus and Javelin Men’s Open respectively. Although drawn into lane 1, which has its disadvantages in sprint events due to its tight curves, Wings AC had their icing on the cake by coming in first in the 4x100m Men’s Open, ahead of Swift and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
