You Got It Wrong SAA … Yet Again
  • March 13th, 2009

If based on the number of votes on the recent poll of the sacking of 4x100m women coach Loh Chan Pew, 78% out of the 82 voted so far is against the change.

Personally on this current issue, I’ve no qualm on the changing of coaches, but its how the decision was made about and handling it that got the athletics fraternity up in arms again.

Indeed it’s the kind of ‘disconnect’ that Singapore Sports Fan described of SAA that has made media headlines for the association, time and again for all the wrong reasons.

Many believe the management is ‘out of touch’ with what’s happening on the ground and and you could say our local athletics standard and abysmal achievements these few decades has a correlation to that.

Do you agree on SAA sacking of Women's 4x100m national coach Loh Chan Pew?

We’ve a response from a reader …

Chia Hearn Kok, “It is not right of SAA to remove Loh Chan Pew as the coach of the 4x100m women’s team (ST 6 Feb). It was he who nurtured the team members since they were at secondary school and junior college from 2003. The no-nonsense Loh who trained them to break the 34-year old 4x100m national record should be commended for his passion, dedication and effort. It is also not fair to ask newly-appointed coach, Tang Ngai Kin, to take over and expect him to produce results with team morale so low. The reason given by Veeramani, the SAA technical director, that Loh’s level 2 qualification is inadequate for the job is a lot of hogwash. The athlete-centric policy suggested by IOC’s Ng Ser Miang should be adhered to by SAA.”
