National junior athlete Matthew Goh endured a nerve-wracking start before bouncing back in style to win the Boys 17 years triple jump gold at the Pacific School Games in Canberra this morning.

The 17-year-old Auckland University of Technology student and Singapore Sports School alumnus took the crown with his effort of 14.89m, just seven centimetres shy of the 24-year Games record of 14.96m.

Matthew’s jump is below his personal best of 14.95m but the young lad will not mind the miss to set a new personal best after his shakey start to the competition today.

After fouling his first two jumps, Matthew heaved a huge sigh of relief when he cleared 14.78 on his third jump. That gave him added confidence and momentum going into his final attempt – and he responded in style with his 14.89m leap.

Nearest rival Dallan Stanton of New South Wales was second with his 14.58m effort which he achieved on his final jump while Len Pearce also of New South Wales, prevented Dickson Chen (AUT and Singapore Sports School) from grabbing the bronze. Pearce leapt 14.45m, a centimetre more than Dickson’s 14.44m.

Matthew’s gold is the second medal he has won at the Pacific School Games.

Yesterday, he finished second in the Boys 17 years Long Jump with his 7.01m effort, which was quite a bit off his personal best of 7.23m. China’s Liu Fei won the event when he cleared 7.17m.

National triple jumper Stefan Tseng also won the silver in the Boys 18-19 years Triple Jump.

However, his best effort of 15.13m was clearly below average by his usual standard as it was way off his national record of 15.78m.

Thailand’s Nattapong Boonkerd won the event in a new Pacific School Games record of 1.560m.
