On a bright Sunday morning yesterday, over 3,500 women took part in the all-women event, Anlene Orchard Mile 2008 Guest-of-Honour Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State, MCYS, flagged off the event
They walked and ran along Dhoby Ghaut MRT station to Orchard MRT station to complete the 1,600 meters distance The winner in the women elite category, defending champion Suzy Walsham, finished in a blazing time of 4 minutes 39 seconds, but many are just content to come down and raise awareness of osteoporosis
Suzy Walsham, the winner of this year’s Elite Mile race, when interviewed, “I am delighted to have once again taken part in this year’s Anlene Orchard Mile and to have defended my title. This is a wonderful event for women to participate and to raise bone health awareness” The Anlene Orchard Mile is modeled after the prestigious Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile in New York and the Sports Relief Mile where two lanes of Orchard Road was specially closed for this charity event.
The Sunday event, sponsored by Anlene and hosted by Sporting Spectrum, is open to women all ages. Proceeds will benefit the Osteoporosis Society of Singapore Last year saw 2,000 female participants taking part, and this year the numbers rose to 3,500. We at Singapore Athletics hope for next year, the numbers will double. Until next year …
