When this reporter arrived at Bukit Gombak today, I was greeted by the subdued atmosphere. I was surprised that such a regional event, THE 2nd South East Asia Junior Championship has such low record attendance. The sparse crowd was mainly made up of the athletes themselves in bulk. Some parents was there, but overall I’ve seen better crowds at a Primary School meet. The association could at least get the word out to schools for some support at least.

Though the attendance in tow was in low number, it doesn’t diminish the excellent performances by our upcoming juniors. We saw a sublime sub 12 seconds run from Jiantara Seangdee winning the 100m ladies finals in a time of 11.83s. While the mens finals hurdles went to the ‘tape’ as Jamras Rittidet pipped Malaysia’s Rayzam Sha by 0.01 seconds with a time of 14.04s & 14.05s respectively.

Our local athlete did us proud too. Our ‘golden girl’ Wan Lay Chi, surpassed her expectation as she obliterate the field with a throw of 13.26m that won her the gold. Her closest rival was some 0.6 meters away. Our promising sprint junior, Balpreet Kaur archived a personal best and also recorded the fastest 100m timing for a Singaporean in the 100m ladies category this year when she clocked 12.30s, earning her the deserved bronze. She was head to head with the eventual winner from half-mark but the Thai girl showed her class as she pulled away in the last 20 meter or so.

Congratulations to all athletes

  1. Edmund says:

the guy (who won the walk)’s age is dubious. i don’t think he is a junior cos i have seen him in many senior meets (even in meets where there are junior categories).

    • Uncle Sha says:

hmm well it was a thai walker … hmm ooh such revelations. how did he get pass the age check? time travel perhaps

i think it’s absurd putting in a senior in if its true as you mentioned

  2. Edmund says:

sha it’s a malaysian according to SAA website. in fact i last saw him in KL 2 months ago. in that meet, junior walkers who can beat the seniors won’t register to walk in the senior category.

how did he get pass? i don’t know but i guess if one looks young anything is possible.

  3. Edmund says:

erm i dunno leh but it’s dubious loh..

  4. Kenneth says:

I don’t think they perform age checks la. As long as on the entry form you reflect your age as junior, I guess they’ll take it as that.

  5. Edmund says:

    o
sha, there are plenty of walk races in Malaysia. Different states have different race and 3-5 states will have meets that draw around 10 000 ppl which is 1/4 the size of our new paper big walk. So if they wanna qualify for sea games or watever, they have plenty of chances.

i was at this maau walk circuit 2 years ago, there were only 6 participants for the 20km and the organiser said : “IT’S ok we are developing national-class athletes, not some walkathon etc etc 6 is fine”. If only some people can think like them and not just focusing on statistics.

    • Uncle Sha says:

wow 10,000 thats alot, hows singapore walking scene?

erm i think based on your last statement, i think walking races takes a backseat in priority here?

  6. Edmund says:

    hehee
situation here is quite bad, but they claim that they are going to schools now (which i dun really have info on).

As far as races go, it’s the same old faces + gurkhas. fortunately we have some juniors joining us.

their 10 000 participants is applicable to their so called mass walks (like our newpaper big walk). for example IPOH STAR WALK, malay mail etc. Other that than, they are in the same situation but with better turn out and standards.

  7. Edmund says:

schools aren’t supporting too – they just think it’s a waste of time. -sigh-

The only reason why, when she hears the gun, she doesn’t break into a jog or begin to run, Is because, like me and you She knows only too well, That ever since time begun Men have had to learn to walk before they run.
