
In this interview, we talk to Ronnie Cai from Nanyang Poly & Wings T/F club. He’s been setting the track scene ablaze after consecutively winning the recent SWIFT and Wings meet. Already pre selected for SEA Games squad, we find out more about this high jumper

- How did you get started with Track & Field
Ronnie: I started jumping when I was in secondary 3. My school did not have a track team. My school PE teacher Mr Soh, who was good in coaching high jump gathered a few tall schoolmates to try high jump. And he spotted me. (Surprisingly I wasn’t very tall compared to my schoolmates)
- Other than track what else do you do?
Ronnie: I like sports a lot. I’m always playing soccer or basketball. I also like to play games at home like PS2 and computer games. I also listen to pop songs and surfing the web
- Per day, what is your daily routine like?
Ronnie: I’ll go to school every morning. After school I’ll be training and then go home for dinner
- Tell abit about your family, any support from them?
Ronnie: My father is a driver. Mother is a housewife and I have two brothers, one 25 years old who is working as a cashier and another 22 is serving NS
- Your career highlight .. the most memorable jump?
Ronnie: Clearing the height of 202cm during the IVP Games 2002
- Ultimate long term goal?
Ronnie: Getting a gold medal in the SEA games
- Goal for this year?
Ronnie: Clearing the height of 210cm
- How do you prepare before a meet?
Ronnie: I just rest the day before competition. Sleep well the night before. That’s all
- Your thoughts before a jump?
Ronnie: Must always stay focus
- How many times u train per week, per day how many time & how many hours?
Ronnie: 5 to 6 times a week. 1 time a day and 1 training is about 3 hrs
- What motivate you to train & venture in track/field
Ronnie: To reach my target and going to SEA games
- Any injury plaguing you before?
Ronnie: I sustained a tear in my left thigh. Not so serious now
- Do you take care of your nutrition?
Ronnie: No, I just eat whatever I like
- Did SARS affect your training?
Ronnie: Not much actually
- You was selected for SEA Games training squad .. so are you in the finalized SEA Games team? What qualification must you meet?
Ronnie: I am not in the finalized SEA Games team yet. I must clear a height of 2.05m to be in the team
- I believe you jumped above 2m before .. when/where was it .. what was your feelings after that jumped
Ronnie: It was in IVP meet last year at Ngee Ann poly. It was a brand new feeling for me. I never did that height before even in training.
