Report

We’re into Day 4 now of athletics, and the past 3 days of athletics action has provided us plenty of world record feats, exciting moments, disappointments and the ‘dramas’

Yesterday saw six gold medals at stake, the Women’s Discus Throw Final, Women’s Pole Vault Final, Men’s Long Jump Final, Men’s 3000m Steeplechase Final, Women’s 800m Final and the Men’s 400m Hurdles Final

USA won their first gold medal at the games in athletics in the women’s discus throw final through Stephanie Brown Tafton. Her first round throw of 64.74m was enough for gold. Cuba’s Yarelys Barrios won the silver with a distance of 63.64m. 11-times Ukrainian Champion Olena Antonova, finally atoning for her fifth finish at the previous games for the bronze with an effort of 62.59m

Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva once again prove to be championship calibre. Similar to the previous games in Athens, she broke the world record in the women’s pole vault event clearing 5.05m to win gold, bettering it by a centimeter. She defended her Olympic title but not without stiff competition coming from USA pole vaulter Jenn Stuczynski. The 26 years old pushed Isinbayeva all through the rounds and Stuczynski herself ended with a silver clearing 4.80m. The bronze went to Russian’s Svetlana Feofanova, who won it based on countback. She had the same height clearance with compatriot Yulia Golubchikova at 4.75m

In the men’s long jump final, World Champion Irving Saladino live up to his pre-Olympic favorite tag and won the event in a personal best effort of 8.34m. South African Mokoena Khotso was second with 8.24m distance while close behind him was Cuba’s Camejo Ibrahim who jumped 8.20m

There was a near shocker win in the men’s 3,000m Steeplechase finals. Frenchman Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad nearly upsetted the Kenyans who have been proven to be ‘unbeatable’ in this event in recent times. There was a dash sprint of three steeplechaser to the finish line, which was finally won by World Champion Brimin Kiprop Kipruto. He won it in a time of 8:10.34, edging the Frenchman by less than two-hundredth of a second at 8:10.49. Mahiedine bettered his personal best by nearly four seconds. The bronze was completed with Kenya’s Richard Kipkemboi Mateelong who was photo-finished at 8:11.01

The women’s 800m final saw a first women gold for Kenya where teen sensation Pamela Jelimo grabbed gold in a time of 1:54.87, which is also a African and World Junior record. Another Kenyan made it to the medal standing, Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei took the silver in a season best time of 1:56.10 while Moroccan Hasna Benhassi was third finishing it a time of 1:56.70

The American led a United States sweep in the men’s 400m hurdles. Olympic Champion from Sydney, Angelo Taylor was champion again winning it in a time of 47.25, his personal best. Kerron Clement pushed Taylor all the way, but he was struggling the last phase of the run and slightly faded. He could only finish second in a time of 47.98. The bronze went to compatriot Bershawn Jackson with a time of 48.06s

Report

The morning of Day 3 Athletics or Day 9 overall yesterday Sunday saw a gold rush of 6 medals
Like Day 2, it was an exciting day of surprises and record breaking feats.

First up, held in the morning was the women’s marathon. The winner Romania’s Constantina Tomescu-Dita won it in a time of 2:26:44, showing age is no barrier as she won it at 38 years old, making her feat written into Olympic folklore as the oldest Olympic marathon winner ever. Second place was former women’s marathon record holder Kenya’s Catherine Ndereba (2:27:06) and the bronze was won by China’s Zhou Chunxia who lost it by a second to Ndereba (2:27:07). Chunxia has the honor of getting China’s first medal in athletics. Britain’s Paula Radcliffe, current marathon world record holder at 2:15:25 and pre-favorite was unfortunate to suffer from cramps and faded after running bravely with the front pack for the half part of the race, despite making a remarkable but haste comeback from injury this year

If the distance running podium winners is any indication, it shows the European countries emerging as a powerhouse to be reckon with. The women’s 3000m steeplechase saw Russian Gulnara Galkina-Samitova making history as the first women athlete ever to go sub-9 minutes for the event. She was on a blistering pace from the start and everyone was struggling to play catch. She clocked the tape at 8:58.81 while second place goes to Eunice Jepkorir of Kenya who took the silver, who also came away with a new African record of 9:00.41. Another Russian made it to the podium, Ekaterina Volkova took the bronze in a time of 9:07.64

Another surprise and first for Slovenia was in the men’s Hammer event. Primos Kosmuz won his small Balkan country first ever gold medal with a throw of 82.02m. In a event dominated by Europeans, a Belarussian took the silver spot. Vadim Devyatovskiy threw a personal best with a distance of 81.61m for second spot while current World Champion Ivan Tikhon, a Belarussian this time round could only get a bronze (81.51m)

The women’s triple jump saw a marked improvement in standard as more than six women was able to jump beyond the 15 meter mark, a first in Olympic history. Cameroonian Francoise Mbango was successful in retaining her Olympic title with a new Olympic and African record jump of 15.39m. A flight of 15.32m was what Russian Tatyana Lebedeva could muster, earning her a silver while the bronze went to Slovenian Devetzi Hrysopiyi (15.23m)

There was a dominating display of the Caribbean sprint talent as in the women’s 100m finals saw a field of three Jamaicans and a Bahamian. The rest of the field was completed with three American and one from Great Britain. But it was the Jamaicans’ who stole the show and showed the world some cool runnings as they finished 1-2-3. Shelly-Ann Fraser at 22 years old became a Olympic champion winning the blue ribbon event in a time of 10.78s, the second fastest time in Olympic history. Second was both Jamaican Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, the officials credited the silver to them both (10.98s)

Ethiopian made in a 1-2 finish in the men’s 10,000m final. Kenenisa Bekele showed composure and controlled front running, a hallmark of a champion. The Ethiopian retained his title in a new Olympic record time of 27:01.17 while his compatriot Sileshi Sihine was second with 27:02.80. A Kenyan completed the podium finish with a bronze. Kogo Micah won it in a season best time of 27:04.10

Report

Day 2 of Oympics offers double gold rush than previous Day 1. Four medals are up for stakes, Women’s Shot Put Final, Men’s 100m Final, Men’s 20km Walk and Women’s Heptathlon

The second day started early with Russia grabbing its first gold in the men’s 20km Walk. Valeriy Borchin mentioned in a post-race interview, that he even surprised himself with his amazing feat. Not only he beat the favorite, legendary walker Ecuadorian Jefferson Perez, Borchin was the same athlete who failed to finish the World Championships last year, and yesterday morning he showed grit determination and had a commanding 50m lead over Perez as he crossed the finished

The highlight of the day would be obviously Jamaican Usain Bolt’s world record 9.69s in the Men’s 100m Finals where it garnered him a deserved gold medal. An astonishing run considering he won the race at the 85m mark and was up in arms celebrating then. The timing could have gone considerably lower than 9.69s if he had followed through. The 100m men final line-up consisted of two Americans, three Jamaican and three sprinters from the Caribbeans. There was no representative from the European, Africa or Asian continent

There was a shock result in the Women’s Heptathlon as Ukraine’s Nataliya Dobrynska won the title of the best female athlete in the world. Dobrynska won it as a surprise as she was not even ranked Top 15 in world coming into the games. She finished first with 6733, that’s 346 points surpassed her personal best. And another shocker, Ukraine made it one-two podium finish as her compatriot Lyudmila Blonska took the silver. She ousted Olympic pre-favorite US Champion Hyleas Fountain for the silver, all thanks to her 800m final effort of 2:09.4 which gained her 6700 points

New Zealand’s Valerie Vili set a new Oceania record in her first throw which eventually was enough for gold in the women’s shotput event. The 20.56m effort was better than Belarussian pair of Nataliya Mikhnevich and Nadzeya Ostapchuk who won silver and bronze, with a distance of 20.28 and 19.86m effort respectively. Our Zhang Guirong didn’t make it past the qualifying rounds and finished 14 out of 17th in the women’s shotput detail Group B with a 16.23m effort. Her personal best going into the games was 18.57m
